Lightningstorm McQueen San Diego Exclusive Update
— May 28, 2008 6 Comments

Last month, Mattel told us about the Lightningstorm McQueen San Diego Comic Con exclusive. This month, Mattel has given us a few more details about this exclusive, including price and edition size. The price is $15, and that includes the black base, clear plastic stand and clear plastic cover (shown at left). The edition size for the exclusive Lightningstorm McQueen has been set at 5,000.
I’m not super happy that Mattel is giving us a convention exclusive for the Cars line to go along with all the other convention exclusives, although I’m not that surprised. However, $15 is great price for everything that is included. And 5,000 isn’t that limited for a convention exclusive. The problem is that scalpers go to these shows to buy up the exclusives, artificially limiting supply and then driving up the prices online. Time will tell though how hard these will be to come by and how expensive they will be once they reach the secondary market.
Incidentally, I am not able to go. So if there are any kind souls out there planning on attending San Diego Comic Con who are benevolent and would like to pick up a Lightningstorm McQueen for yours truly, I would be extremely appreciative and forever grateful to you. Hey, it never hurts to ask.
I am allready going and getting a few for collector friends on another cars newsgroup.Do let me know if I can help anyone

Yeah, you are probably right. I just wish their exclusives would stay that way. I bought a 3-pack just for the Lightning Ramone only to have him come out on a single card a few months later.
I’m hoping that they release Lightning Storm McQueen in a Movie Moment with one of those spark plug monsters, that would be a great movie moment.
Lastly, I was at a Sears Essentials store yesterday, and back in the toy aisle they had Cars toys on short cards, just like Hotwheels cars. I don’t think I’ve seen them mentioned here, and even though they are just a card variation I thought that some of your readers who are completist might be interested in knowing about them. They had the following Cars on short cards;
Lightning McQueen
Dinoco McQueen
Radiator Springs McQueen
Mater
New Mater
Chick Hicks
Lizzie
Dinoco Helicopter
Sheriff
Doc Hudson
This is in all likelyhood not a complete list, but its what they had when I was there.
Dave,
You have a very good point. That may be true to a certain extent. Lightningstorm McQueen has already been announced as a regular release. However, current speculation is that it won’t be exactly the same as the San Diego exclusive. One, it certainly won’t have the stand and the display case. Two, the exclusive version has a metallic/chrome paint job, which the regular release may or may not have. There is no way to know at this point, and Mattel has not said.
If Mattel plans on a regular release of Lightningstorm McQueen, then yes, most collectors won’t need the exclusive version. But if you are a completist, then you won’t want to miss out on it.
In addition, it has potential to gain a lot of value on the secondary market, and many buyers will want it for that reason.
I’ve read from a few different sites that Mattel reps have said that none of their exclusives are actually “exclusive”. I think it was in Toyfare magazine where they said that all of their cars ,”may at some point come out on a single card.” Since the Wal- Mart exclusives turned out to be anything but, I’m willing to wait and see if I can get all the Speedway of the South cars and Lightning Storm McQueen on single card, Movie Moment or 3-pack.
ABout the request for Lightning Storm, if anyone is going I will also pay for one. plus some extra for your trouble and shipping
Whoa, $15. That sounds like a little too much there, but it’s a limited edition, so it must cost that much.
Anyway, I’ve also got good news: I’ve just received word that Stacy, the Leak Less pitty, has just come out! If I’m lucky enough to find her, I’ll be one happy Cars fanatic!
