Update 2: Here is this year’s poster for the event.
Update: Event starts at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 20th.
Last year’s Kmart Cars Collector Day was so successful for Mattel, they’ve decided to have 2 this year apparently. The next Kmart Cars Collector Day is Saturday June 20th, 2009. There will be an exclusive case. Here is the case assortment.
- Lightning McQueen
- Mario Andretti (Italian Chase Packaging)
- Mini
- Patti
- Todd, Pizza Planet Truck
- Vitoline Pitty
Mario Andretti is the second chase packaging variant in the Cars line. Mini and Vitoline Pitty are new and Patti and Todd are re-releases.
There are also several Piston Cup racers in this case. This will be the first time all of these will be released on a single cardback, plus they will all have synthetic rubber tires, making them completely unique. Here is the list of the Piston Cup racers in this assortment.
- Bumper Save (2)
- Clutch Aid
- Easy Idle
- Lil Torquey Pistons
- Mood Springs (2)
- No Stall
- Retread
- Shifty Drug (2)
- Tow Cap
Here is a gallery of the exclusive Mood Springs.

Oh and these are not MattyCollector.com exclusives as they are being labeled in some eBay auctions. I believe the reason they are being reported that way is because there is a MattyCollector.com logo on the back of the card.
Here’s how it will work. Everyone will get to draw a number and then you go in the order of the number you selected. You will be allowed to buy 5 Cars. Then it will be the next person’s turn. After all the people who have drawn numbers have finished selecting their five Cars, any Cars remaining will be available for everyone.
This is all we know so far. Stay tuned for times and a list of participating stores. The second event is scheduled for October 17th, 2009.

Had a great time in KMart in Sandston, VA. Only 6 turned out for the event, with a few children. We drew numbers, got our five and then got to get all the rest. Store employees were super nice. Sorry I dont know much about collecting cars but I get a little help from the kids.
Its me again.. Not only did my son get all the cars he wanted at the 11am event in Colorado Springs, CO. We went to a different Kmart after 2:30pm and they had tons of extra ones and then some so he got a few more. They must of had few people or something because there were way to may left. Forget about paying those ridiculous prices on Ebay when you can get them for $3.69 each…
Went to the KMart in Hayward, CA and we all had a great time. The Store had a track set up and kids could race each other on the track, all participants got a certificate with their name. Too cool.
Just an FYI, I’m sure you guys already know, the Todd in the Kmart cases is different than the ones that have been showing up in the past. The Kmart Todd has black rims/tires, the previous release has gray rims/tires.
I beg to differ. The case H Todd I got from Walmart has black rims and tires. So it looks like this one is the same. I’m not aware of one with gray rims and tires.
And I do need to say that we really enjoyed the event and the manager of the Stockton Ca store was professional and friendly and he conducted things exactly as the instructions stated. So a much deserved “WELL DONE” to Kmart Stockton
Well we went to the Kmart event today in Stockton Ca. In the begining it looked like my daughter , son and I might be the only ones. But as it got near 11 others trickled in. Probably about 14 to 16. They had two of the big cases that had I guess was it 6 cases in each ? Anyway my son and daughter bother had their number drawn and selected their cars. I did not have my number called but I did end up winning a poster .I was pretty much able to get everything I wanted. I suppose I am a collector myself although I basically keep a collection of one each for my son and occasionally sell to support his collection. But some of the “collectors” were the most obnoxious people attending. Actually trying to discourage those who didn’t know better not to select the best cars.
Went to Kmart today in Colorado Springs, CO and got lucky. My 11 year old son got all the new cars he wanted and we were even lucky enough to win one of the free collectors posters. It was a GREAT DAY!!!
I got Lucky there was nobody but Me. I had pick of anything i wanted.
12 days out – Do we have a list of stores that this is taking place at yet?
I don’t have a list for you. If you are concerned, I would check with my local store to see if they are participating or not.
They closed several Kmarts around here so there is pretty much only one. I plan on showing up and see what happens.
To get as much information as possible, I wrote to Sears Public Relations (and got a response back!) about the day. According to them all of the KMart stores in the country will participate. Numbered tickets will be handed out day of event only. There is no need to camp out because numbers will be drawn randomly. When your number is called, you have five minutes to get five cars. When al the numbers are caled, the rest will go up for general sale. I was told there is NO age limit to get ticket (my 2 and 5 year olds will love that!) so, we’ll get four tickets total. Good Luck to you all!
It should be noted that Mario should be the “correct” RED WHEEL version, not the tan-wheeled version that was passed off on us last year.
can`t wait
I can’t figure out why Mattel would want to have Cars days at K-Mart, and not at retailer that gets regular and timely shipments of Cars toys. All the K-marts I know of gets a new case or two of Cars maybe once a month, and with few exceptions its a case that every other retailer has had for months.
OK, maybe they are trying to help out K-Mart, but K-Mart never does anything after each event to keep collectors coming back, in fact, most K-Marts are hostile towards collectors. Well I’ve ranted long enough, time to go watch the Colbert Report. Bye all.
From what I’ve experienced lately, Kmart is getting as many CARS products as any other retailer. ToysRUs has been a joke, not having received a case in probably 2 months…..and zero on order. Walmart had Todd and Patti a few weeks ago, then nothing since. Target, same thing, nothing new for weeks. I’ll give Kmart credit for taking the CARS Day idea as far as they have. Last year’s October event was a big hit, and I’m sure the June and October events this year will draw even more people.
My K-Marts suck for all toys and Toy R Us is getting bad to. Target And Wal-Mart seem to get shipments regularly.
Noooo! I’m going to be out of town that weekend, my kid has wanted Mood Springs since the first time he saw Cars!
Wrecked Mood Springs is due out in 2010……”Don’t take me out, coach, I can still race!”
